The sustainability of our planet is a major concern for many and especially amongst our students. As London’s true ‘campus university’, Roehampton is proud to be an institution that incorporates and actively promotes sustainability. Growhampton is the award winning student-run sustainability programme driving this forward at Roehampton, with the aim of making ‘being green’ easy, accessible and fun – for students, staff and now also the wider community.
So what is Growhampton?
Growhampton projects include the Edible Campus - a main growing site complete with polytunnel, orchards and a number of smaller growing areas; Learn to Grow sessions for students; and the Hive Café - an ethical and environmentally conscious coffee shop, serving up homemade wholesome hot food, made lovingly by our in-house chef. Because it is independent, every pound you spend in the Hive goes straight back into the Growhampton project.
One of Growhampton’s most successful spin-offs is Soil in the City, a student led community outreach programme providing local schools with information on growing food, plant and animal care and nutrition. They children are taught outdoor survival skills; fire lighting, shelter building, field cooking and food growing skills. They love it!
Support for this fund will enable the Growhampton team to work with more schools and also with other community groups.
Congratulations to Growhampton who have received a Green Impact Award for the third year in a row!
