Transforming Spaces, Transforming Lives

2022 marks the 150th anniversary of Roehampton’s Southlands College. Southlands is proud of its values driven Methodist heritage and, as home to the Faculty of Business and Law, welcomes a wide community of supporters across the world to celebrate the anniversary throughout 2022.

A major part of our celebrations will see the launch of a new fundraising appeal – the Transformation Fund which we have established to provide impactful opportunities for our students and the spaces they use on campus. Please join us in this historic opportunity to drive forward plans to support the cohort of students within the College and wider Roehampton community. You can do this by making a gift to the fund which you can read more about below.

Our target for the anniversary year is £500,000 and we are delighted that we have launched this appeal with University funding of £60,000 and a gift from the Southlands Methodist Trust of £72,000.

Transforming Lives

Roehampton’s values are based on a passion for inclusion and student focus. In difficult times, this is more important than ever. Our community of students is diverse, bright, and bursting with a potential to succeed, irrespective of race, class or gender. However, many of our students also face challenges through their university experience; including financial barriers, commuting long distances or personal circumstances such as living in care or having to look after relatives.

By supporting this fund you will join our commitment to transform lives by helping our students to develop the confidence, knowledge and adaptability they need for a successful graduate career and fulfilling life.

Transforming Spaces

The Queens Building at Southlands College was built in 1997. Twenty five years on, the space is struggling to meet the needs of today’s Business School students and staff. A long term £6 million project will significantly transform the building, creating a sustainable learning environment that will accommodate the evolving needs of those who use, manage and fund buildings in efficient, effective, environmentally-friendly ways.

The development will re-orientate the college buildings to face the local community – offering a more permeable boundary; encouraging knowledge exchange between the university and our local communities; and providing spaces for key local facilities, social enterprise and start-up hubs.

The anniversary provides us with a platform to launch the campaign with a focus on smaller projects. Our first project is to create the Southlands Exchange, which will become a welcoming, inspirational and energetic student and visitor destination, with flexible semi-open settings, self-help kiosks, consultation rooms, and seating.

With the majority of Business and Law students commuting to university, this space will enable our cohort to make the most of their studies and their time outside of class and to enhance their engagement in wider university activity.

Making a gift – no matter what size - will help create opportunities for our brightest and most in need students, whether awarding a prize for entrepreneurship, a scholarship, or financial support for those looking to broaden their career prospects.

If you would like to discuss opportunities for your organisation to be involved with this project through sponsorship or corporate matched giving please write to Eleanor Merrick at e.merrick@roehampton.ac.uk
